Joachim Fest (1926-2006) was a prominent German historian and journalist. He was the author of several penetrating works on the Nazi period in German history, including the highly acclaimed biography of Hitler in German, the first major biography of the Nazi leader since the publication of 'Hitler - A Study in Tyranny' by Alan Bullock, first published in 1952, not very long after the end of the Second World War. Fest had more time to access documents and other resources to write his biography and other works on the history of Nazism. Having lived through the war, he had also experienced first-hand what Nazism had done to the world and how it had destroyed his country and its reputation. He never accepted that his fellow countrymen at large had not known what was going on.
This memoir is a poignant reminder of what happens when people turn a blind eye to atrocities committed in their midst or in their names. His father was dismissed from his post as a headmaster, as he would not toe the Nazi line and told his sons to always remember the maxim: 'Even if all others do - not I', from which the title of this book is derived. Fest was ten at the time but he never forgot. He spent his childhood in an environment where one did not know whom to trust and where everyone was at the mercy of the Gestapo round the clock. A magnificent account of what went on during those dark years.
