Arthur Sandeyn, who was the first publican in Marblehead, was allowed to keep an ordinary there in 1640. The port was fortified after some fashion as early as 1643-44. I had pointed out to me the spot where the Constitution dropped anchor when chased in here by two British frigates in April, 1814.
