A welcome album for Duran Duran fans of old, Night Versions takes all the old hits, from "Planet Earth" through "Wild Boys," and compiles their remixes into a fantastic and insightful retrospective. So why are so many of the remixes called Night Versions? According to Nick Rhodes' liner notes, they recorded extended versions of their singles to be used in night clubs. Rather than have the master tapes cut and taped into remixes, Duran Duran went back into the studio and recorded longer versions of the songs with more instrumental breaks. As time went by they worked with Nile Rodgers of Chic and allowed their songs to be cut and pasted in typical '80s fashion. "Planet Earth," "Girls on Film" and "My Own Way" are great examples of the back-to-the-studio approach, while "Rio," "Hold Back the Rain" (the best track on the album by far) and "The Reflex" work well with the cut-and-paste approach. Night Versions will take you back to some of the greatest music ever to come out of the '80s. ~ Paul Fucito, Rovi
