These three discs present 51 tracks recorded at the Newport Folk Festivals between 1959 and 1966, including some giants of the genre: Flatt & Scruggs, Jim & Jesse, Bill Monroe, and the Stanley Brothers. There's a generous portion of material by most of the acts featured, including seven 1965 songs by Monroe, ten (from 1960 and 1966) by Flatt & Scruggs, and 13 (from 1963 and 1966) by Jim & Jesse. The Newport Folk Festivals were important events for the popularization of all facets of folk or folk-based music, and this set effectively encapsulates their contributions to bringing bluegrass to a wider (and often white and Northern) audience. No less than 16 of the cuts were previously unreleased, although with the exception of a couple 1963 Jim & Jesse performances, these are by the least well-known acts on the set: Hylo Brown and the Timberliners (with Earl Scruggs), Don Stover, and the Lilly Brothers (with Don Stover and Tex Logan). As for the most recognizable "hit" of the package, Flatt & Scruggs do a version of their famous Beverly Hillbillies theme, "The Ballad of Jed Clampett"; and Jim & Jesse do an unexpected cover of Chuck Berry's "Memphis, Tennessee." Most interesting are the three tunes by Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard. These have a sense of reaching for something and hunger that is not always heard in the always-accomplished, but flashily polished, performances on much of the rest of the package. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
