2011 marked the 70th anniversary of the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Day concerts, and it was the first time that it was conducted by Franz Welser-Möst. Welser-Möst chose a few Strauss family works that are rarely heard -- including a couple that have never been performed at a New Year's concert -- and which had some significance, to celebrate either a connection with his family or an anniversary.
