The Vienna Philharmonic played to an empty hall. On the one hand, the concert was, as might be expected, a reaffirmation of the tradition. The conductor was Riccardo Muti, who had led the concert five times before, and who has been on the podium more than any other individual since the Philharmonic adopted the practice of rotating conductors yearly. Muti's engagement was probably in place before the coronavirus pandemic was on anybody's mind, but the program is of a highly traditionalist cast, seemingly designed to provide reassuring familiarity. It is all-Viennese, with the Strauss family even more heavily represented than usual and strong on familiar tunes, although there are, as usual, a few surprises.
