Estonia's Neeme Järvi has been a prolific recording artist and a well-loved conductor in many countries, including the U.S. He has amassed a large body of recordings on several labels, so it's hard to capture the breadth of his legacy on a single compilation. Still, this one from Chandos is a strong consideration. It's a bit light on Järvi's championing of music from his native Estonia, although it does include a sample of the attractive and otherwise obscure Five Pieces of Heino Eller. And there's a complete lack of probably Järvi's greatest specialty, the music of Jean Sibelius. Instead you get works by the moderately interesting Johan Halvorsen and Johann Severin Svendsen (not by Jacob Gade, another true Järvi specialty). You get distinct compensations for these lacunae, however. One is a good look at the later part of Järvi's American career, in Detroit, where he showed an admirable ability to immerse himself in a new situation in comparatively old age.
