Frederic Masson's study of Napoleon's last years is one of the essential texts about the emperor. Thoroughly researched and beautifully written, it draws extensively on original documentation, some of it unpublished, and takes a very clear-eyed approach to the veracity of each of those sources.
As a Frenchman, Masson understandably tacks a little closely to the Bonaparte wind at times, but this is no hagiography. It's an even-handed study, thoroughly examining the relationships and motivations of all St. Helena's occupants, both pro- and con- the island's most famous resident.
The translation by Oxford scholar Louis Frewer is clear and unfussy, making the narrative as enjoyably accessible in English as in the French original.
If you're a student of Napoleon, you must not miss this book.
