This is a satisfyingly full and thoroughly researched account of the life of one of the most influential teachers ever, including her early ambitions as composer. Boulanger is particularly known for having taught many of the American composers who came to prominence in the 1920's and beyond, notably Copland, Virgil Thomson, Roy Harris, William Schuman and numerous others. I was surprised that Rosenstiel's account did not emphasize these as much as I expected. She placed great emphasis on Boulanger's French colleagues and students. My chief reservation is that the author dwelt on the various disappointments Boulanger experienced far more than I think Boulanger would have approved of.
