Mostly arranged from other media by unspecified parties, the program consists largely of French standards. There are a few works by women to break this up, but one of those, the Sicilienne supposedly of Maria Theresia von Paradis, is not by her, or by a woman, at all (it is a hoax by violinist Samuel Dushkin) and is an odd choice for a work chosen to represent female composers (an arrangement of one of Louise Farrenc's songs might have worked better). However, the album is quite fresh and one any lover of flute music should hear. There is a delightful little essay from de la Vega recounting her arrival in Paris from Sydney and, among other episodes, her ejection from a hotel after miscalculating the exchange rate of Australian currency and her subsequent rescue by a 90-year-old mentor. Her enthusiasm for the City of Light is palpable in her playing as well as in her prose. A young player to watch,...
