Illustrated with the author's own bizarre drawings, these hilarious pieces focus on the life of Thurber's family during his boyhood in Columbus, Ohio. They add up to one of the great, if eccentric, portraits of life in middle America in the early years of the century.

My Life and Hard Times by James Thurber
Autobiographical nonfiction set in the early decades of the previous century and told in the author's now distinctive wry, droll voice, this book is a timeless classic. The stories, which include "The Night the Dam Broke" and "The Car We Had to Push", are parables of the human condition and the foibles to which we are all prey?even as they are set in a specific and recognizably Midwestern setting, rendered with deadpan-humor accuracy. The deft, lumpish cartoons accompanying the stories are a perfect counterpart to the characters. The "Get-Ready Man" was a byword in our household when I was a child, and I am delighted to have him restored to us in this copy of a well-loved work by an author whose writing I use in my teaching.
