Part of the album's intention is to establish the central Missa Horrendo subdenda rotarum machinamento, the anonymous "Subjected to the terrible machinery of wheels mass," which the performers dub the Catherine Wheel Mass, as a Scottish work; James IV was a devotee of St. Catherine of Alexandria, reputed to have died the horrible death that lent her name to the Catherine Wheel.
