The potential buyer may wonder what the phrase best-of might mean with regard to Hildegarde, who did not have specific "hits" in the modern sense. Even more noteworthy is the absence of any performer's name in the graphics. Apparently the compilers thought the name Sequentia would be unfamiliar to the target market, but this Swiss-German group was largely responsible for popularizing Hildegarde's music in the 1980s and 1990s, and you could hardly do better for a sampler. That's what you get here. The recordings are drawn from Sequentia's six albums of Hildegarde's music; the original sources are not indicated, but a large group seems to come from Symphoniae/Spiritual Songs (1983). The group cultivated a stark, dramatic sound that brought out the soaring, mystical lines of many of Hildegarde's chants, accompanying them lightly with one or more medieval fiddles...
