The music does come from the late 16th century, a period during which instrumental versions of vocal works were beginning to evolve into distinctively instrumental genres. But a brass septet would have been a stretch, especially in the three movements of the Missa Papae Marcelli (Pope Marcellus Mass) of Palestrina. This said, the brass ensemble Septura deserves credit for departing from the usual late Renaissance polychoral repertory explored by brass quintets. Their approach may indeed work best in the Gabrieli pieces, which are the closest to that repertory, but the subtle textures in the arrangements by trumpeter Simon Cox and trombonist Matthew Knight catch some of the spatial ingenuity of the originals even if brasses are quite a shift from a vocal line.
