Barber is getting better treatment across the Atlantic than he is stateside these days, and listeners have various choices for the cello sonatas by the two composers on this album, but Sheku and Isata really have it all. The sonatas are separated by a series of song transcriptions, the ones of Barber by Simon Parkin and those of Rachmaninov by Sheku Kanneh-Mason himself. In these, and in the slow movements of the sonatas, Sheku displays an arresting cantabile that is way beyond the norm, but Sheku and Isata are equally good in the outer movements of the thorny Barber sonata, and here, it is Isata who shines.
