This would be a mistake, however, for these are fresh and careful readings of the two violin concertos and the Symphony No. 29 in A major, K. 201, works by the teenage Mozart that are generally given a light touch and lumped stylistically with the sunny mood of his French works of a few years later. Bohren and conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy are after something different. In these works, they hear the young Mozart striving toward formal and textural complexity, and Bohren tones down both the volume and the brilliance of his 1761 Guadagnini violin in favor of chamber-like interactions with the orchestra. It's a virtuoso piece of work on the part of both violinist and conductor, and it's especially well suited to the Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219, where...
