A complete cycle tracing one man's relationship with the South, this trilogy begins with the images captured by an enthusiastic, idealistic Northern outlander during his treks to the region immortalized by Faulkner -- Oxford, Mississippi. In the intermediate volume, however, the outlander, leaving his Missouri home more and more frequently for this cultural "oasis", recognizes that marital discord is at the heart of his flights. Moreover, his original perceptions of the land and its people, based largely on his reading of Faulkner's novels, start to delude him. And by the third volume, the hypocrisy and bigotry of small-town Oxford, with its commercialization of Faulkner, exacerbate his disillusion, a malaise that ultimately leads to his moral and spiritual degradation.
