When I see a poor waif shun'd by pride and its folly, And all good intentions rejected with scorn, It makes me so sad, an' so grim melancholy, That often, full often, to sorrow I turn. Pride, we all know, has made thousands surrender To poverty's blight with a heart-broken sigh, And often has made them too sadly remember The unlucky mortals with whom they were shy. Oh do let's be friendly, an' cautious in thinking, Remember our Charter stands open to all Who wish to be freed from the slav'ry of drinking, That leads worth an' merit to an ignoble fall! Always be ready to welcome the stranger, Who from the drink fetters desires to be free; Guide him as well as you can from all danger, And never let pride sit where duty should be.
