Born in 1932, French composer Michel Legrand moved swiftly into film and television and attained celebrity by his early thirties with his Oscar-nominated work on Jacques Demy's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964). He staked career and reputation on a brilliant signature style commonly termed "haunting": heavy use of violins and low-key, ascetic orchestrations.
