When German Opera was in its infancy, the inhabitants of the Old Hanse town fostered its early efforts with a well-directed zeal which soon led to its acceptance as an independent mani festation of inventive power. The earliest Singspiel that was ever publicly performed in the German language - Johann Theile's Adam and Eva - was first produced at Hamburg, in 1678.
