Social and Political basis for a railway
A very thorough history of the legal and financial maneuverings that, after many false starts, lead to the finally realization of the Kettle Valley railway. James J. Hill and his Great Northern RR is often depicted as the villain, but early management of the CPR is not always innocent of killing early aspirations. An interesting story that could have benefitted from a greater exploration of the engineering challenges that were often minimized by the dreamers and promoters (and maybe some con artists) seeking a railroad tie between the natural resources of south central BC and the Canadian western coastal cities.
