Moacyr Scliar is a wonderful Brazilian writer who, unfortunately, is very little know in this country. This short novella is the basis for Martel's Life of Pi in regards to setting (being stranded on a boat with a large cat in the middle of an ocean), and it explores, among other things, paranoia and persecution. This little book lends itself to fruitful literary mining. I would gladly use it in an intro course on Latin American literature, together with Scliar's even better novel, The Centaur in the Garden.
