The image that a player projected to his or her public became a vital part of the studio star system as it developed during the early years of the motion picture industry. In his film of 1910, The Thread of Destiny, D. W. Griffith, the pioneering filmmaker, used extensive detail shots and close-ups of the actors' faces to enliven his story. Griffith's innovative use of visual symbols not only created an interplay between exterior appearance and interior emotion, but his use of the close-up also served to give an individual identity to his actors and actresses, who until this point had been anonymous members of the Griffith film ensemble. Thus began the era of the star, which endured for the next three decades, until Hollywood's Golden Years came to a close. Many elements were needed to make the star system work: the fan magazines and gossip tabloids, the actors, actresses, and film directors, the studio moguls and publicists? Plus, of course, the millions of die-hard movie fans, who bought tickets each week to catch yet another glimpse of their heroes and heroines. The task of creating the larger-than-life screen personalities fell to the studio photographers? The still men. Much of what we know about Max Munn Autrey, one of these "still men, " derives from the fond remembrances of his friends and co-workers; from stacks of film stills, newspaper clippings, and old movie almanacs; and from the diligent investigation and painstaking research of the members of the 1988 Museum Studies Class.; 8vo 8"-9" tall; 64 pages.
