Three CDs may seem like a lot of Marin Marais, but this is exactly the recording's strength; one needs to hear a lot of these short dances together to appreciate their distinctiveness, but they are usually played singly or in small groups. Each little piece solves the structural problems posed by the rhythm in its own way. There are little explosions of virtuosity, which Sakai and Martineau handle confidently, and the momentum never flags. The players lightly reorganize the published sequence of pieces, something that one easily imagines Marais might have done, and the overall impression of an untrammeled realm of musical invention is strong.
