A modern classic of Jewish theology, Man Is Not Alone is a profound, beautifully written examination of the ingredients of piety: how man senses God's presence, explores it, accepts it, and builds life upon it. It is a major theological work, which led Reinhold Niebuhr accurately to predict that Heschel would "become a commanding and authoritative voice not only in the Jewish community but in the religious life of America."

Abraham Joshua Heschel made it his life's mission to try to persuade secular moderns that God's existence was of supreme importance. Better than any book that I know, Man Is Not Alone makes the case that God's presence can be vividly felt, if only we let Heschel show us how. The argument is as compelling now as when the book was written in the 1950s. Heschel is firmly rooted in the Jewish tradition but he speaks convincingly to people from many religious traditions.
