Excerpt from Make and Make-Believe Bears live in every part of the world. There are bears in the cold and frozen north, and in the hot jungle countries. The great white polar bear lives in the land of ice and snow. He is the largest of the bear family. His body is sometimes nine feet long and may weigh as much as sixteen hun dred pounds. He is the only one of the bears that has hair on the bottom of his feet. This helps him to walk on the slip pery ice. He is a great swimmer, and can swim for miles and miles. In the days before the white men came, there were many bears in America. The largest of them allwas the grizzly. There are still some grizzly bears in the western part of our country, and they are very fierce and strong. But most of the bearsleft in the United States are black bears. The black bear is not a fierce animal and will not kill a man unless his little ones are in danger. His coat is shining black and very soft. His brother, the brown bear, who lives in Europe, has no such fine coat. His fur is rough and hard. But he is a better fighter than the black bear. It is he that catches his enemy in a bear hug. Bears eat all kinds of food. The polar bears and the grizzlies like meat, but the brown and black bears eat very little meat. They like veg etables and honey. Bears can climb trees but theyclimb slowly. When they come down a tree, they always put their hind legs down first. In the winter the bear finds a cave or hollow tree and there he sleeps until spring. Before he goes to sleep he grows very fat, so he can do with out food during his long sleep. The cubs are born in the early spring. At first they have no fur and can not see. But when they are a month or so old they open their eyes, and when they are a little older, they grow a beautiful, soft coat. They tumble about and play like puppies.
