Riccardo Chailly paces this symphony in long, confident strides, neither rushing for excitement nor pushing the ensemble for extra drama. Chailly's centered, calm purpose dominates the proceedings, and no extraneous effort is attempted to further the music's already impressive aims. Furthermore, a sense of expectation and genuine reverence runs through the performance, and the musicians' joy is almost palpable. The "Veni, Creator Spiritus" is perhaps the acme of Mahler's contrapuntal writing, and the choirs' staggered entrances are subtly layered to sustain interest.
