Spohr, a contemporary of Beethoven who lived into the mid-19th century, was a celebrated virtuoso of the violin, an innovative conductor, and a prolific composer, and his cycle of ten symphonies forms an important part of his output, which also includes 22 concertos, ten operas, four oratorios, and numerous chamber works. Yet Spohr's music fell into obscurity after his death, largely because his conservative style pointed back to the Classical era of Mozart, rather than to the Romantic "music of the future" of Berlioz, Liszt, and Wagner. Modern attempts to revive Spohr's music have been intermittent since the late 20th century, so Griffiths' impressive set provides a much needed boost.
