The program covers songs from between 1841 and 1859 when Liszt was trying to back away from his rock star image and broaden his palette. They are mostly in German, with a few French songs, including four settings of Victor Hugo. There are several strong points, starting with the impressive singing of soprano Julia Kleiter and her startling quiet upper register. Then move on to the generally high quality of the songs on the program, which includes not only the Hugo songs but also a set of Schiller poems and pieces with texts by Heine and Goethe. There are settings of Die Lorelei and Goethe's Mignons Lied, in which Liszt is clearly aware of his famous antecedents, but pushes their boundaries.
