It is hard to describe this book to someone who is a typical 21st Century soul. We are so cynical and ironic by comparison. Lillian Gish's story is not a recounting of abuses, sexual adventures, divorces, scandal, tabloid headlines or even a knowing coolness. Rather the value of this book is in it's utter sincerity and Lillian's long quest to be a wise as possible. And, except for perhaps some conservative lapses of judgment that I can certainly forgive, she seems to have achieved a serious measure of real wisdom in the long course of her life. Gish reveals herself to be as thoughtful and compassionate a person as has probably ever graced the silver screen. And she reveals herself to be a woman of deep, not pushy, Christian faith as well. She may have seemed to be a waif sometimes in film, but in reality her suppleness had the elasticity and strength of gold. Her comments on the great film pioneer D.W. Griffith are laudatory and sad: Her comments on the film industry trenchant. When she seemed too pure (and powerful) for MGM, Thalberg told her they could create a scandal for her. She refused and thus ended the first phase of her career in complete integrity. Lillian Gish had what is now practically an archaic virtue, yet one so desperately needed: character.
