'" It is no mighty wonder if those who set out in life with a good fortune amass great wealth; but that was not my lot. My father was a merchant, but he died before I was born, leaving but little to my mother, and she was deprived of that through the villany of her kinsmen, and forced to take shelter in the house of a friend, where she lived upon alms. As I grew up, however, she prevailed upon a schoolmaster to teach me reading, writing, and ciphering gratuitously. I had even a little turn for drawing; but nothing had my mother and I between us in the world, save our wooden bowl and earthen jug. '" One day she said to me, ' My son, you should be a merchant like your father. There is a banker in the town who is generous as well as rich, and, perhaps, he may advance you a small sum to start with in trade. Vishachala is his name. Go to him, and ask him for a loan.' Upon this I went to Vishachala's house. As I entered the counting-house I heard him speaking in an angry tone to a young man. 'A clever fellow, ' said he, ' would be able to make a fortune with that dead mouse, ' pointing to one that lay on the floor. 'But as for you, I have lent jou large sums, and 1 hardly expect to see either principal or interest again.' Upon this I took up the mouse, and requested Vishachala to let me carry it away as a loan.
