Each of "Les Girls" has her own interpretation of the group's previous professional and amorous escapades. To make sense of these wildly diverse recollections, the court must rely upon a fourth party to straighten things out. Enter Gene Kelly, the dancing star who organized "Les Girls" in the first place. But can Kelly be believed? The "truth" of the many reminiscences in Les Girls is secondary to the dazzling beauty of its female stars, and to the delightful musical numbers, the best of which is an extended Marlon Brando parody titled "Why Am I So Gone About That Gal?" This was Gene Kelly's last musical effort for MGM, the studio he joined way back in 1943; the film was the inspiration for the short-lived 1963 TV series Harry's Girls, which starred Larry Blyden, Susan Silo, Dawn Nickerson and Diahn Williams. Les Girls is a classic mid-50s musical, with Gene Kelly still going strong. I got it to see Kay Kendall's performance, when she was still at her best. Her brilliant career would be cut short by leukemia only a few years later, when she was barely 30. But her comedic timing, her willingness to do anything the script called for, from quick verbal exchanges, to slapstick, and her sheer chameleonic beauty were always a delight. But she was a real actress, not just another 'pretty face' - though she could certainly 'do' that, and carry it off with aplomb - glamour to the hilt. Her first film, 'The Constant Husband', made in 1946 with Rex Harrison, made her an instant star, a status she never relinquished.

A Nice Movie To Watch as You Fall Asleep
I viewed this movie on PBS in the middle of the night. It was a simple movie with a pleasant story line that could keep one entertained until sleep exhausted him or her. I would call it an early chick flick. It was adorable and a little comical. I wouldn't call it fantastic except for the dancing which I think truly made the film. I could also be considered a feel-good movie. After all, it IS a comedy. I'd put it in my collection to watch from time to time. Other than that, it is "okay".
