Fast down the sloping crystal Glided the golden sun, Smiling, as if complaisant, For his day's work duly done. Down to his amber palace He sails in a golden boat, And around on the sea-like ether Not a cloudlet dared to float. In at the open window Wandered the breath of the flowers, Odour of rose and lily, With spice from jessamine bowers. A MEMOR r. In at the window floated, And lingered, as loath to leave The room, which by pure taste garnished, Looked fair in the fading eve. The deep, sad eyes of the Laureate Looked down from his pictured face On the group in quietness gathered In that fair room's ample space.
