In this sentimental romance scripted by director Luigi Comencini and Marcello Fondato, leading-lady Claudia Cardinale rises above the tepid screenplay to turn in one of her better efforts. Set in a small Italian village in the 1940s, La Ragazza di Bube tells the story of a woman who falls in love with a complete stranger (George Chakiris). The stranger turns out to have killed a fascist policeman during World War II and is sent to jail for 14 years. The woman pines for the convict and waits out his sentence, spurning the love of a writer (Marc Michel) who wants to marry her. Chakiris is typically stiff, and Carlo Rustichelli's passionate score makes more of the situation than is warranted, but Cardinale's controlled, low-key performance keeps the film from becoming too overwrought. Seller's Description:
New. When the war in Italy ends in 1944 and partisan fighters make their way back to their homes, a young partisan nicknamed Bebo stops off at a village in Tuscany to pay his respects to the family of his closest friend, who was killed by the Germans. During his short stay, he meets his dead comrade's naive and innocent half-sister, Mara. They begin to date; Mara is bored with her peasant life and finds excitement in spending time with a local hero. Later, Bebo is involved in a flareup between partisans and Fascists and kills the son of the local police chief. He asks Mara's father for her hand in marriage; later, he is warned that he must go into hiding, and Mara consents to accompany him after he buys her a pair of high-heeled shoes and takes her out to a restaurant. On the road, Bebo saves the life of Father Ciolfi, a collaborationist priest. Mara becomes increasingly attracted to Bebo, but they are separated when he is forced to flee the country. Mara finds work at a city print shop and meets Stefano, a serious, sensitive writer who falls in love with her. Mara begins to wonder if her feelings for Bebo were anything more than infatuation, but when she learns that he has been returned from France and is about to stand trial she visits him in prison. She tries to help him at the trial but is tongue-tied before the judge; and when Bebo is sentenced to 14 years in prison she realizes that she has remained "Bebo's girl" and decides to wait for him.
