In late 2003, Fonovisa released La Historia Continúa... (The Story Continues), a 73-minute, 18-track best-of that boasted some of the most essential recordings Marco Antonio Solís has provided for the label. For an artist of Solís' stature and history, there is no way that a single CD -- however excellent -- is going to tell the whole story. So a follow-up was inevitable, and in May 2005, Fonovisa came out with a 73-minute, 18-song sequel titled La Historia Continúa..., Vol. 2. Solís' hardcore fans -- and he certainly has plenty of them in the vast Spanish-speaking world -- will be familiar with most or all of the songs in this collection, including "El Peor de Mis Fracasos" (The Worst of My Failures), "Tu Amor o Tu Desprecio" (Your Love or Your Contempt), "Tu Carcel" (Your Prison), and "Prefiero Partir") (I Prefer to Break Up). "Prefiero Partir," it should be noted, was also recorded by Ezequiel Peña, one of the best traditional Mexican singers of the '90s and 2000s. But while Peña has a banda/mariachi orientation, Solís is the essence of Latin pop (although he favors a traditional mariachi approach on Rafael Rosales' "Las Noches las Hago Dias" -- the only song on the ballad-dominated CD he didn't write). The first La Historia Continúa... was perfect for novices and casual listeners, and the same goes for this sequel. Casual listeners who don't own a lot of Solís discs but found La Historia Continúa... to be a highly rewarding introduction are advised to pick up La Historia Continúa..., Vol. 2 as well. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
