Ok, ok, I kinda dogged on Prince of Thorns, but this one redeemed the series for me by adding quite a bit more nuance. Very slow in the beginning with what felt like some pretty indulgent prose and jerky writing that had me losing interest. However, with this installment, Jorg gets MUCH needed character development, as do quite a few of his companions. We actually get a tad more matured of an anti-hero character that isn't just a petulant, edgy 14-year-old and I have really started to like him, and the Brothers are given quite a bit more personality. The post-apocalyptic medieval world that was touched upon in the first novel is very widely expanded upon here, with some world-building that had me fascinated. The plot points feel much more reasonable and more thought out in this installment as well. While it's still a bit of a problem, there isn't nearly as much of a feeling of "Jorg always wins because, well, he just does, even when it's cheap or makes no sense." as you had in Prince of Thorns. Overall, a fantastic action-y journey and I'd say a strong 3.5 or decent 4/5 at best. I am very glad I continued the series.
