Excerpt from Joshua Sturges's Guide to the Game of Draughts: In Which the Theory and Practice of That Scientific Recreation Are Clearly Illustrated, Including One Hundred and Seventy-Two Critical Positions Mr. Walker generally designates the variations by letters; occasionally by numbers; while Sturges in his original edition referred to them by numbers, same as in Sinclair. In the present edition, I collate the several games under their several openings, transposing the numbers of the squares in those games which begin with the high numbers, - as game 12 - and subdivide some few of the openings into parts for convenience of reference. At the foot of each variation is noted where it is found in Walker's Sturges; and Payne's games are also credited. $5 indicate improved moves. Erroneous variations which Sturges corrected himself, I enclose in brackets. Those points where I think Sturges's play can be corrected, I call attention to by letters, and by referring to the end of the opening, the correcting play will be found; also, at the back of the book, I give the play of some additional corrections discovered by myself and others while the games were going through the press.
