The texts on this collection of partsongs by John Ireland and E.J. Moeran come mostly from the 16th century, and indeed the music represents a kind of expansion on the English, neo-madrigal of the Romantic era. Both composers ventured into chromatic territory, but the essential spirit of the madrigal remains. Ireland was Moeran's teacher, but outlived his student and continued to develop his style in interesting ways. The last Ireland piece here, The Hills, dates from after Moeran's death.
