Think of In Sorrow's Footsteps as a sort of introduction to the melancholy theme in Renaissance choral music, and you'll have a great time with the CD and enjoy the sounds of the Marian Consort, lush in spite of the group's small size. Luxuriate in Delphian's excellent engineering work at the Merton College Chapel at Oxford. Two contemporary works, by Gabriel Jackson and James MacMillan, frame a group of Renaissance standards that are beautifully sung throughout. There are settings of the "By the rivers of Babylon," Stabat mater, and Ave Maria texts by Palestrina, and any of these would serve to interest a new listener in Renaissance music.
