The most unusual of the three items on the program is the set of Seven Virtuoso Etudes composed by Earl Wild to famous melodies of George Gershwin -- they're really more Wild than Gershwin, despite the Gershwin/Wild designation, and if they leach some rhythmic vitality out of Gershwin, they carry plenty of technical challenges, in which Lovchinsky apparently received instruction directly from the nonagenarian pianist himself. Lovchinsky handles these with notable smoothness, and he offers original and notably unfussy readings of three Chopin mazurkas and the big Polonaise-Fantasie, Op. 61, to open the program, emphasizing large lines over ornamentation...
