It?s not hard to see why the first edition of this book was called ?The Politics of Marriage? ? it?s the most clinical and political study of Henry VIII?s matrimonial saga. But instead of making the book unreadable, this clinical detachment does the opposite. The story of Henry VIII?s six marriages seems even more like a soap opera when we see the machinations and reasons of state that went into most of them. Viewing the rise and fall of each wife with Loades? hard-nosed understanding of sixteenth century politics makes for a different perspective from the more personal studies by Alison Weir and Antonia Fraser. Loades? study does, nonetheless, also contain astute analyses of the various ways in which each wife succeeded and/or failed in personally pleasing this capricious monarch, and holding ? or losing ? his favour.
