In 1962 George Jones cranked out a lot of albums. Fuel 2000 has taken two of these (My Favorites of Hank Williams and George Jones Sings Bob Wills), chopped a few tracks off each, and combined them into one disc. In 1962 George Jones cranked out a lot of albums. Fuel 2000 has taken two of these (My Favorites of Hank Williams and George Jones Sings Bob Wills), chopped a few tracks off each, and combined them into one disc. The 14 tracks on Hank, Bob & Me have seven songs from each of the records. Why they didn't just go ahead and make it a two-fer is a bit of a mystery. They also decided to mix the tracks together; it would have made more sense, both from a historical and sonic standpoint, to keep them separate. Still, if you are a die-hard fan of George Jones who doesn't already own the two records, you will want to pick up this disc. Hearing him wrap his dulcet tones around the great songs of Hank Williams, like "Your Cheatin' Heart" and "Mansion on the Hill," is a treat. He is pretty faithful to the source material, and while the band could be a little more exciting, the seven Williams songs are a success. The seven Wills tracks are a bit less so, as Jones doesn't really swing. The band turns the Western swing of the Texas Playboys into a smoky honky tonk sound, but Jones sounds a little stiff on dance numbers like "Take Me Back to Tulsa." And if anyone can figure out why they included the instrumental "Steel Guitar Rag" instead of something Jones sings on, please send in the answer. It is really a shame when good music is packaged poorly. Unless you are one of the diehards mentioned above, you should probably look elsewhere for quality George Jones reissues. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
