Tony Winch has written a remarkable and accessible guide to food production that will prove invaluable to all concerned with horticulture and agriculture. In a world where food is becoming increasingly politicised ? food for cars or food for stomachs? ? Mr Winch returns to basics and reminds us of the diversity and wealth of wonderful foods that can be grown on this planet. Growing Food should be in the library of every university in the land.

This must be a unique reference book on growing food crops anywhere in the world, providing an enormous amount of information, without being overwhelming, on growing conditions, nutritional values and uses etc., in a very accessible format. As a veteran backpacker, I think its a great reference book for anybody who loves travelling and believes that eating the local cuisine is an essential part of the experience. Here you can find out what goes into the matoke of Uganda, the enjera pancakes of Ethiopia or the refried beans of Mexico. And I enjoyed dipping in for other intriguing facts as well, like what went into poor old Esau?s mess of pottage or why the ornamental garden plant, Love Lies Bleeding, is a seriously under used food crop.
