Pompa-Baldi has a smoothness and lightness of touch that makes the smaller pieces soft and delicate, heard particularly in the last half of the set of Poetic Tone-Pictures, Op. 3. He knows exactly how he wants each phrase to sound and how each phrase fits within the piece as a whole. The same is true of the Suite and the Sonata. Pompa-Baldi plays the Prelude of the Suite with a slightly heavier hand, especially when bringing out the bass tune. The other movements are as lightly colorful as the character pieces, so that the Romantic aspect of the music outweighs the Baroque.
