The second disc in Vernon Handley and the Royal Philharmonic's series of recordings of the music of Granville Bantock is just as rich and ripe as their first disc. Bantock's Fifne at the Fair from 1911 is lush and luxuriant with sensuous melodies and seductive harmonies and although Beecham used to make a specialty of the work, Handley and the RPO are just as voluptuous and perhaps more polished if possibly less playful. Bantock's Pagan Symphony from 1927 is plush and decadent with delusions of Dionysus and illusions of Aphrodite, and although Handley tries manfully to impose order on profligate chaos, he and the RPO only rarely succeed and the work remains a mass of tuneful and colorful but quintessentially inchoate sexuality. Bantock's Heroic Ballads (2) from 1944 are just as full of pseudo-Celtic flapdoodle as his Celtic Symphony and Hebridean Symphony from Handley and the RPO's first disc, but thankfully much shorter and too the point, while Handley and the RPO's performance is just as compelling....
