Excerpt from Gossip From Paris During the Second Empire The letters thus contributed were handed to the publishers of the present volume for publication in the spring Of 1902. They form nine bulky volumes, and range over the political and social life of Paris during those few years. They are essentially the letters of a journalist, and, in selecting about one twelfth of the material to form the present volume, 1 have sought to give that which might interest readers of to-day. In the form in which they were preserved the letters were naturally full of misprints; I have tried to eliminate these as far as may be, but I cannot hope entirely to have succeeded.
