The pieces on this CD span his career; his Concerto for small orchestra and violin (1925-1927) was his first important orchestral work and the Cello Concerto (1955) was his last. The Concerto for small orchestra and violin merges a romantic sensibility with a Baroque attention to contrapuntal development, and the work has an attractive straightforwardness and clarity.
