If you truly loved the man, his music, and his story--this book tells it in depth, from his immigrant grandparents forward.. I lived in San Francisco for a two year period and this book was extremley useful in locating his various past residences, hang outs, plus the locations where he taught music, met future band members and where his early Palo Alto-Menlo Park bands played. Great photos. A must for any deadhead who not only listens but reads. A more in depth study than Phil Lesh's book, although Phil's book is told in first person, Jerry was a true innovator and explorer-like the Lewis and Clark of rock n roll, but with benevolent heart. All the way from bluegrass banjo, Chuck Berry influenced rock, through exotic experimental acid rock jams and amazingly, back to pedal steel. It is tragic that his inner demons lead him to the Persion heroin, which stole his music and his life. I suspect the death of his beloved father at such an early age- before his eyes, was a pain he never got over. We heard the pain in his voice but he felt it inside.
