A number of recordings devoted to the music of Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599) have appeared since the year 2000, and they reveal a major composer of late Renaissance unaccompanied choral music (as well as some secular pieces). Guerrero was roughly contemporary with Palestrina and followed his restrained, smoothly moving style, but his music has neither the utter transparency of the famous Palestrina masses or the dark gloom of Palestrina's other major Spanish follower, Victoria.
