Guerrero was roughly contemporary with Palestrina and followed his restrained, smoothly moving style, but his music has neither the utter transparency of the famous Palestrina masses or the dark gloom of Palestrina's other major Spanish follower, Victoria. This disc presents a Missa Surge propera and seven motets, several of them on texts pertaining to Mary -- a figure to whom Guerrero was apparently so devoted that his contemporaries called him "El cantor de Marķa." Guerrero has Palestrina's tendency to think in terms of large vertical spaces that can be filled in a variety of ways, but he uses the resulting dense textures in text-expressive ways; the motets are serene and devotional without being simple.
