His Requiem was apparently well loved in its time: it was never published, but it has been found in more than 50 manuscript copies from all over Europe that have been gathered and edited into a performing edition here by the conductor Stephen Darlington. This is one of those cases where you can understand both the appeal at the time and the work's subsequent neglect. Its arias in the operatic style, angelically sung here by members of The Sixteen, have a Brahmsian quality of warmth that goes instantly to the heart, and the reason for all those copies must have been that people wanted it played as a comfort at their own funerals.
